Nicholas Wolken and Stephan (Mu) Maurer have been doing things differently since they started up KORUA. It’s not a typical snowboard brand so we’ve come to expect fresh things from them. And their latest short film does not disappoint. Get stoked for some winter cruising and be sure to check out some words from Nicholas in the little interview below…
Hey Nicholas, we’ve been following your project for a while but I guess this is just the second season that KORUA boards are available for the public. Can you tell our readers what the brand is about, for those who aren’t familiar with it?
In short we are all about having fun doing turns on boards that are made for specific conditions.
Last year’s Yearning for Turning had a lot of AK riding in it, but this year you guys are also riding more familiar terrain. Why did you decide to take the project in this direction?
Well in the end the new film portraits a style of riding that we (and many others) do most. Which is riding in a resort and making the best of it. We went on 3 short trips with our friends and tried to capture the blast we had on and of the slope.
Any funny stories to share from last season?
Cyrill’s bail in the movie was a highlight of the trip for sure:-)
Did you guys travel much last winter?
We did. I spent some time with Antti Autti and Christian Haller in Japan and Mu (Stephan Maurer) traveled the Globe doing his web series for the Swiss Snowboard team.
What kind of snowboarder are you guys building boards for?
Our current line was strongly focused on Stephan and my own demands. In the coming models we’ve focused more on specific conditions and made sure that there are also boards for smaller and lighter riders.
How can we get our hands on one of your boards?
You can order from our webshop but we also have some core shops like Zero-G in Chamonix, Agane in Bellinzona and Hinterlandshop in Schiers.
Do you think that traditional brick and mortar shops are a thing of the past?
I can see theme-stores offering all kinds of products that are selected for a certain customer working well in the future. But this means the shops must put a lot of effort into finding interesting products to carry and create a good vibe and a certain style for themselves. Those are the shops I buy product from.
Besides this movie project, what other new stuff are you working on with KORUA these days?
Of course we are working on our new boards but we want to do more testing events and maybe a KORUA Banked slalom. But we definitely will be putting our race-faces on again for the upcoming banked season. Other than that, I am looking forward to doing some cardanchi trips with Mu and our buddies in Japan and chasing the pow!
